Rabbi Yishmael ben Elisha Cohen Gadol was a Tanna who served in a high priesthood in the late Second Temple period. He received divine revelation when he entered the Holy of Holies to burn incense on Yom Kippur. Executed by the Romans together with Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel, President of the Sanhedrin.
The death of the two was foreseen after little Samuel watched it being on his deathbed: “Simon and Ishmael to the sword.” The date of their death is the 25th of Sivan, and it is mentioned in the books of Halacha as a date worthy of fasting as “the fast of the righteous” because “the death of the righteous is considered the burning of the house of Elkino.
The tomb of Rabbi Yishmael Cohen Gadol is located between Moshav Shezor and the village of Sajur, south of Peki’in.
