Chonni A Meagel Tomb

was a Tanna from the Second Temple period. He and his grandchildren were known for their prayers in the years of drought that were answered in the rain.  lived and operated at the end of the Couples Period, while the Second Temple existed. Rabbi Yochanan testifies that in the days of the Choni HaMa’agal there was clarity in the study of the Beit Midrash, and that he would justify any question raised by the sages.

Honi HaMa’agal, as well as his grandchildren Hilkia and Hanan, were known for their prayers. In a mishnah in Tractate Ta’anit (Chapter 3, Mishnah 8), Shimon ben Shetah likens Khoni to a beloved son who can ask his father as much as he can think of, and his father will fulfill his wish. El Khoni and his grandchildren were married for years during the drought, and they, by the power of their prayers, brought the rains. Khoni’s doctrine also includes the principle that every person should act for future generations, just as his ancestors did for him in previous generations.

The tomb of Honi HaMa’agal and his grandchildren, Abba Hilkia and Hanan Hanahba, is located in a cave on the western outskirts of the Galilean town of Hatzor. Inside the cave is a simple tombstone bearing the inscription “The Holy Tanna of the Circle and His Grandchildren.  the burial place of his family.
