rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto – Ramchal Synagogue – In the 16th and 18th centuries, the Jewish community had two synagogues in Acre: the Ahab Synagogue and the Ramchal Synagogue, which lived in Acre in 1743-47.
The Ramchal Synagogue was the largest and most magnificent of the two.
In 1758, the Bedouin ruler of Acre, Dahr al-Omar, confiscated the synagogue, which was one of the most beautiful buildings in the city and built the Al-Malek Mosque above it. Some say the remains of the original synagogue are still preserved under the mosque structure. As a substitute, the Jews received a small, shabby building north of the Al-Malek Mosque. In recent years the synagogue has been renovated and restored and has opened its doors to the public.
