An 2000 years old ancient Jewish synagogue in the village of Peki’in in the Galilee. Stones dating to the MISHNA משנה-period were found in the building.
A tradition in the hands of the Bnei Peki’in that the synagogue was built on the ruins of the Beit Midrash of the Tanna Rabbi Yehoshua ben Hanania. The existing structure was renovated in 1837 CE, following the great earthquake that struck the Galilee region.
Most of the population of Peki’in today is a Druze, but until a hundred years ago there were several dozen Jewish families. One of these families is the Zinati family, whose descendants have continued to live in Peki’in and even maintain the synagogue to this day. According to family tradition, the Jewish presence in Peki’in has not ceased since the days of the destruction of the Second Temple.
