He lived from approximately 135 to 217 CE. He was a key leader of the Jewish community during the Roman occupation of Judea.
President of the Sanhedrin and Deputy Editor. Known as “Rabbi” or “Our Holy Rabbi”. Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi lived and worked in the Galilee in the 2nd century CE. As president of the Sanhedrin, he led the restoration of the Jewish community in the Land of Israel after the Bar Kochba revolt. Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi is considered one of the greatest presidents of Israel due to his spiritual qualities and greatness in the Torah, which culminated in the editing and signing of the Mishnah.
The tomb of Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi is located inside the large cemetery in the ancient settlement of Beit Shearim in the Lower Galilee – one of the places to which the Sanhedrin discovered in the time of Rabbi. Beit Shearim is not far from the city of Tzipori – from which Rabbi operated in his last years. There is an unusually large burial cave, with tombstones for members of the president’s family.
