Rabi Ishmael Ben Rabbi Yossi was a Tanna in the fifth generation. He was the son of Rabbi Yossi and his definite disciple, but also studied with Rabbi Yehuda. In his old age he sat before Rabbi Yehuda the President and learned Torah from his mouth, and even dined at his table He was a friend of Rabbi Chaya and the rabbi of Rabbi Hanina Bar Hama.
Rabbi Ishmael had four brothers and he was the eldest: Rabbi Eliezer, Rabbi Halafta, Rabbi Avtilus and Rabbi Menachem.
The Talmud mentions a case in which Abden tried to harm the honor of Rabbi Yishmael Rabbi Yossi in the beit midrash of Rabbi Yehuda the President, and was severely punished from heaven
He served as a policeman catching thieves, because he was raped by the king to do so, and yet, when Elijah the prophet met him he proved him “how long will you hand over Elkino’s people for killing” and ordered him to flee to another city
