Raban Gamliel Tomb

President of the Sanhedrin in Yavne after the destruction. A descendant of the old Hillel and the grandfather of Rabbi Yehuda the President – the Mishnah seal and son of  Raban Simeon ben Gamliel

After the destruction of the Temple and the loss of institutions of government and law, Rabban Gamliel boldly and humbly led the restoration of the Jewish world under Roman rule. He regained the powers of the leadership, acted resolutely to resolve halakhic disputes, and played a key role in shaping the world of mitzvos in an age without a temple.

Rabban Gamliel’s tomb is located near the city of Yavne, in an area now known as the “Sanhedrin Garden”. There is a large stone building built by the Muslims in the 13th century CE, with two domes on top. There is a synagogue and a large hall that can be used for meals, and next to it is a large lawn. The site is usually open only during the day.
