Elijah’s Cave is a cave on the slopes of Mount Carmel in Haifa. In it, Elijah the prophet hid in flight from Ahab king of Israel, during his wanderings on Mount Carmel. Elijah’s Cave is sacred to the Jews. Curtains used to be hung PAROCHET פרוכת on the southern wall where there is a recess, similar to the location of the ark in the cave walls. Outside the cave, it is customary to light candles and pray for the peace of the sick, for matings and for the fruit of the womb.
