One of the greatest of the conditions, one of the ten royal martyrs. He is considered the father of “Oral Torah” and is one of the “descendants of the chariot.”
Tanna Rabbi Akiva lived in Judea after the destruction of the Second Temple (first and second centuries AD), and was a third generation of Tannaim. Unusually, he began to study Torah at an older age. The Talmudic story emphasizes his great devotion to learning despite the life of poverty and destitution that have been his lot for many years.
Rabbi Akiva was a disciple of Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Yehoshua, and his many rulings are woven throughout the width of the Mishnah. His famous disciples were Rabbi Meir, Rabbi Nehemiah, Rabbi Yehuda and Rabbi Shimon – among the pillars of the literature of the Tannaim. Rabbi Akiva was among the few sages who openly supported the Bar Kochba revolt.
After the failure of the revolt, he was captured by the Roman authorities and executed in agony with the verse “Hear Israel” on his lips, in a way that has since become a symbol of the sanctification of the name by Jews in all generations.
The tomb of Rabbi Akiva is located in the city of Tiberias. The tombstone is located west of the Old City (today’s Kiryat Moshe neighborhood), and its identification is anchored in traditions dating back more than 800 years. The tomb is located at a high point in the city overlooking the Sea of Galilee and the Golan Heights. In place of a closed compound and a synagogue for prayer
