Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai (Riv “z), (living in the 1st century AD) was one of the greatest Tannaim in the period around the destruction of the Second Temple. Was a disciple of old Hillel, and like his rabbi, was a man of peace and hated war
He fled from besieged Jerusalem and persuaded Vespasian to allow him to re-establish the Sanhedrin in Yavne, where he led the remnants of the sages, restored Torah life in the Land of Israel, and was one of the first to amend regulations appropriate to existence without a temple.
