Lifta is a stratum spring in the “open water” in West Jerusalem. The spring is identified with the ancient spring “Ma’ayan Mi Niftach” mentioned in the Bible in the Book of Joshua as a border point between the tribe of Judah and Benjamin
The spring originates in a hole about 30 meters long and the water level in the hole ranges from 5 cm to 25 cm. At the end of the hole the water flows into the pool that drains the hole, the height of the water in the pool is one and a half meters. The pool water flows about 10 meters to those gathered in another pool that is about half a meter high. From the second pool the water flows in the natural channel and contributes to the fertility of the soil. Around the spring are planted fig trees, almond trees and sabers, carob trees and aquatic vegetation – willow trees, hairy willow, watercress and more
